I would have given this facsimile print 5 stars except I could never acknowledge that "I Love it"; a prerequisite for awarding 5 stars under Amazons system of reviewing books. It is perhaps the most original and pivotal work on sexual perversions and deviations that has been written, and has been very influential on some schools of modern views regarding what might be described without demurr, as unusual sexual activities.It examines many subject we would, even today, treat as forbidden or at least close to it. It deals with deviations from 'amor lesbicus' to zoophilism, from necrophilia to gerontaphilia, from sadism to beastiality, from sodomy to sex. In order to prevent any afront to ladies or persons uneducated in Latin, some of the more sensitive parts were written in that language. The book proceeds on a case by case study basis, with brief summary of the facts of the person displaying the psychopathy and then the learned author, Dr Richard Krafft-Ebing, gives his opinion on what is then stated. This book is a must for aspiring crime writers, its savage effects have been much ameliorated by time and by a broader understanding of some of the causes of the numerous 'deviations' he cites. I say 'deviations' but doubt whether it is really the case since no-one, including the author, has been able to categorically state what a 'normal' person is, and in the absence of such a definition deviations are sometimes only relative. You may need either a fixed looking glass or powerful glassess to get right through its 600 pages as it is in a tiny print covering little more than 50% of the page width.

I first saw a copy of the hardcover edition of this book when working at the public library in 1968. It was not on the open shelves. It was in a private room and had to be requested and read there without checking it out. The really dirty parts were in Latin. In 1969 a complete English translation appeared in paperback for the first time, 67 years after the death of the author. That is how notorious this book was. It is a horror museum of human sexuality, Every possible and impossible perversion was presented in lurid detail. The reader feels as if he had been cast into a snake pit. Much is made of homosexuality, which then and for a long time afterwards was considered to be deviant. Let it be noted that the word "perversion" was originally (in England in the 1850s) used to denote religious heresy, particularly Anglicans who converted to Catholicism. It was only with the rise of German/Austrian psychiatry in the 1880s that the word "perversion" came to be applied to sexual heresies. The religious origin of this word speaks volumes about the connection between religion and psychiatry. This book is hopelessly antiquated in its outlook, but still useful to the student of the history of sexuality, and still amusing to the idle reader who is looking for sensationalism.
